Pocomoke River Kayak Tours
Step into the still waters of the Pocomoke, where bald cypress rise from the depths, eagles circle overhead, and the stories of the Eastern Shore flow as deeply as the river itself.
Tour Overview

Glide into one of Maryland’s most enchanting landscapes on a guided kayak tour through the Pocomoke River near Snow Hill. Known to the Algonquin people as “the river of black water” for its tannin-rich stillness, the Pocomoke is both serene and full of life. My 2–3 hour tours are beginner-friendly, paced for relaxation, and kept small for a more personal experience. Sunset departures add a magical glow as golden light filters through the cypress canopy.

What You’ll Experience

Ancient Trees & Hidden Depths: Paddle among towering bald cypress and Atlantic white cedar, where knobby “knees” rise from the water. Learn how Ice Age geology shaped this river into one of the deepest-for-its-width rivers in the world, reaching depths of up to 45 feet.

Wildlife Encounters: Spot bald eagles, ospreys, barred owls, herons, turtles, otters, and prothonotary warblers flashing gold among the trees. Beneath the surface, fish such as largemouth bass, chain pickerel, sunfish, and ancient-looking longnose gar thrive in the dark water.

Living History: Discover how the swamp once sheltered Native peoples, freedom seekers, and smugglers. Early settlers harvested cypress and smelted bog iron at Nassawango Creek. Today, places like Furnace Town and the Delmarva Discovery Center keep that history alive.

A River Restored: Once channelized and drained, the Pocomoke is now a Chesapeake conservation success. Since 2012, conservationists and local landowners have reconnected floodplains and restored habitat. The Nature Conservancy’s Nassawango Creek Preserve now protects nearly 10,000 acres of swamp forest.
